Twenty-five years ago, Johnston Design Group opened its doors in Greenville with a straightforward conviction: that the built environment should enhance the well-being of the people who inhabit it, respect the natural systems that sustain us, and be worth building in the first place.
We’ve spent twenty-five years testing that conviction against real projects, real budgets, real clients, and real constraints. It has held.
What we’ve learned along the way is that restorative design isn’t an ideology — it’s a discipline. It asks harder questions at the beginning of a project so that the answers are better at the end. It requires genuine collaboration: with clients who are willing to articulate not just what they want to build, but how they want to live and work. With communities that have a stake in what rises on every corner. With contractors, engineers, and craftspeople whose knowledge shapes every detail.
Greenville has given us extraordinary work to do. We’ve restored national treasures and textile mills, helped independent booksellers and creative professionals find homes in historic buildings, designed the tallest building in Greenville while at the same time a tiny home prototype for returning citizens, and always serving people who want to be connected — to their landscape, their neighbors, their own lives. Every project has made us better at the next one.
At twenty-five, our commitments are the same as they were at the start: to collaborate honestly, to serve this community thoughtfully, and to design in ways that leave things better than we found them.
